Spring Party: Alice in Wonderland

Lewis Caroll's Alice in Wonderland is now a world famous children's novel. It makes me happy to know that the same books and movies that I grew up with are now being learned by the next generation in Spain. The story goes that Alice chases the White Rabbit and falls through a rabbit hole where she steps into the magical world of "Wonderland" where she meets characters such as the Duchess, the Chesire Cat, the March Hare, the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts included with perpetual tea parties, executions from the King, many animals and Alice waking up to realize it was all a dream.

An 1865 classic along with its sequel Through the Looking Glass original children's books have now been made into several versions of stories, disney movies, and cartoons.

This past week I got to go with 2A to paint flowers to decorate the school for the spring party today.
Thank you to the mothers who organized the craft and the event, it was a lot of fun for all the children today.

U.S. Monuments

3B and 3A just finished a unit about the different parts of a city where we looked at a city map of Seville and they had to locate several monuments in the city center. Some of my favorite places included La Giralda, El Torre de Oro, El Museo de Bellas Artes, the train station Santa Justa etc.

To wrap up the unit I showed them the following monuments in the U.S. and talked about my experiences there.

The new unit we just started about public transportation where I showed them some pictures of transportation in the U.S. Vocabulary includes bus, airplane, taxi, van, lorry/truck, train, underground, bicycle, car etc. You can see more about public transportation in my previous blog here:

State Fair in the U.S.

This week is FERIA! By far my favorite time to live in Seville. Since we have off most of this week in order to enjoy the fair I took the opportunity to educate some of my students about the Del Mar Fair in San Diego, CA.

This Wednesday in front of the main gate or "portada" at the Fair of Seville.

Vocabulary includes: fried foods, rides, tents, ferris wheel, attractions, exhibits, theme, contests and blue ribbon winners. The theme this year "Mad about the Fair" is based on Alice and Wonderland, which is also the theme are school will be discussing this spring :)

We also watched a video about all the different unhealthy fried foods you can try at the fair.

Do you remember some of the differences and similarities between the fair in April in Seville?

Happy April Fool's!

With 4C and 6A I got to talk about April Fool's Day which is celebrated on April 1st widely in the U.S. and the U.K. The day when everyone plays jokes, tricks or pranks on people, you shouldn't believe what people say.

Here is the reading we did in class:

We also did this worksheet where we talked about which prank would be better:
1. Putting a bucket of ice cold water on the door so it would fall on whoever pushed it open
2. Putting chocolate in a toothpaste container for someone who is going to brush their teeth
3. Wrapping a car in plastic wrap for someone who wants to go to work
4. Filling up an office cubicle with balloons

We then watched some of the infamous Simpsons episode about April Fool's which you can view here:

USA Industrial Revolution

With 6B, 5B and 6C I had the opportunity to talk about the Industrial Revolution in social science. Beginning in England, there were some very important advancements and inventions in New England. We also got to see some original videos from the library of congress of what life was like in a factory in the United States.

Here is the link to the presentation online:
